Forum Post: 816X/389X EVM, Sandisk SATA 3 X110 SSD communication not working

Hello,

I have an 816X/389X EVM and am testing the SATA interface with various SSDs.  Of the ones I've tested (Intel, Kingston, Crucial SATA 3s, Apacer, WD, Greenliant) the drives are detected and work fine with all but the Sandisk X110 (SATA 3).  My PC sees the Sandisk X110.  It fails on the EVM with

"ata2: SATA link down (SStatus 1 SControl 300)"

From the SATA spec "SStatus 1" means "Device presence detected but PHY communication is not established (COMINIT is detected)"

Sandisk says the drive is backwards compatible to SATA 1 and 2.  I found in the TI SATA FAQ:

-----------

If the device under question is backward compatible with Gen 2 then it should work at 3Gbps with our SATA host.

NoteNote: We have observed interoperability issues with some of Gen 3 devices. Hence we cannot guarantee compliance without testing the device under question.

-----------------

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this with the Sandisk?  Has TI tested the Sandisk X110?  Does anybody know anything more about why it is failing or have a fix?  The SSD doesn't have jumpers to force SATA 2 as far as I can see.  This is a concern moving forward because it looks like Sandisk may not even be making SATA 2 devices anymore (I don't see any on their website).  We can use drives from other manufacturers, but we'd like to understand the problem and get it fixed if possible.

Thanks.
